Looking for a Local Business: Six Questions You Must Ask First

We’ve got pretty good at finding the businesses who go the extra mile & take pride in their work.

Here are our top six things to look out for….

1. What do other people say about them?

Whilst its true that some companies go to the trouble of creating fake reviews, and others ‘encourage’ (or bribe!) their customers to create reviews, the majority of them are genuine.

Warning Signs: Companies who have reviews which sound too good to be true, or which have all been left by 1st time reviewers.

TIP: Check a few directories to get a better idea of what people are saying.

2. Are they are a member of a professional association or group?

Not every industry has a professional association, but many do. These associations ensure their members adhere to minimum quality standards.

Membership also demonstrates a commitment to professional development.

3. Are they licensed, insured and qualified?

You’ll be surprised at how many traders are not! Hardly any one asks these questions, but everyone should be. Ask for license numbers and a copy of their insurance certificate.

Check a licence number online.

This will help you weed out the scammers and conmen (and there are a few of them around!).

4. How professional is their image?

A well organised, skilled company who takes pride in their work, will make an effort to look professional.

This doesn’t mean they need to have an expensive glossy website or spend a fortune on signage, but it does mean they’ll have a tidy appearance, clean their equipment and usually wear a uniform.

5.What is your 1st impression like?

First take a look at their website and directory listings.

Is their website promoting their level of service and highlighting their awards, membership, qualifications and previous work – or is it just a special offer or sales page?

Then give them a call and have a quick chat.

Do they sound like they love what they do and are going to take care of your house/car/business? Or do they sound like ‘they’ are doing you a favour when you call?!

If a business can’t return calls, give you a proper quote, or take the time to have a quick chat to find out what you need, do you think they’ll do a good job when you give them the work?

6. What do their previous customers think?

Ask for details of 3 or 4 recent customers and contact a couple at least (depending on the size of the job).

If a business tries to stall you, or give excuses; run a mile. A great business will be happy to provide you with references – because they are proud of the work they’ve done.
