Top 3 Homemade Cleaning Products & Remedies (includes recipes)

Whether you’re looking for eco-friendly stain removers or you’ve simply run out of cleaner to use on those fresh red wine stains, it’s useful to have a few home cleaning recipes ‘up your sleeve’! Here’s a few homemade cleaning recipes to keep you covered, all using ingredients that are easy to find in any well-stocked larder or medicine cabinet.

Cleaning Mirrors and Glass

Whether you’re wiping toothpaste off a bathroom mirror or cleaning red wine stains off a fancy glass table, you often need a little extra help to get that shiny finish. This home made window, mirror and glass cleaner contains rubbing alcohol to polish the surface, and cornstarch to keep it streak-free.

You will need:

  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 2 cups water

All you have to do is place all these ingredients in a spray bottle and shake it well. You’ll need to shake this mixture up every time you use it to make sure you get the full anti-streak benefits of the corn starch.

If you like, you can add 8-10 drops of essential oil to leave your favourite fragrance behind. Don’t worry too much about smell though – by the time the vinegar has evaporated, any trace of its smell should be gone.

Floor Cleaner

When you’ve had an unfortunate spill and are looking for something to help get tea, coffee or red wine stains off your floor, these household ingredients make a simple and effective floor cleaner that’s safe for use on marble, granite, and natural stone.

You’ll need:

  • 2 cups warm water
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 3 drops liquid dish soap

Choose your dish soap carefully: only a plain dish soap will work for this solution. Soaps that contain moisturisers, antibacterial agents, or bleach are much more difficult to rinse away and could leave you with a slippery floor! If you like, you can add essential oils to fragrance your floor cleaner. Alternatively, the juice of half a lemon will also work.

All Purpose Cleaner

This recipe will give you a cleaner that’s effective enough to tackle even tea and red wine stains, but gentle enough to use on just about any surface.

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 10 drops tea tree, lavender, or lemon essential oil

Start by mixing the vinegar and essential oils together in a little water. Transfer the mixture to a clean spray bottle, then add the baking soda and top up with cold water. Let any fizz die down before you put the cap on your bottle, and try to use a glass container if you can.

Note: In this recipe, the essential oils really are essential. Tea tree, lavender and lemon all have disinfectant properties, so pick whichever you like best.

To use your cleaner, shake the bottle well to combine your ingredients, then spray it onto the surface you’re treating and wipe it away with a damp cloth.

There you have it: a collection of simple cleaners that are easy to make and use anywhere in the home. Happy cleaning!
